Bugs!

Summer’s here and you know what that means… BUGS!

Here at Barks n’ Bubbles we work hard to make sure your Fuzzy Friend is as comfortable as possible without those pesky insects buggin’ them, but you can take part too! When summer arrives it is always good to update your dog on all their flea, heartworm and tick medication. That will ensure they are happy, healthy and itch free all summer! As well, make sure to do tick checks as often as you can, so that you reduce the risk of any diseases associated with summer pests.

Here’s a list of bugs to keep an eye out for on your pup!

Ticks – Ticks are external parasites that feed on humans, mammals, birds and even reptiles and amphibians. Ticks can cause a number of diseases: Lyme Disease, Q Fever, Colorado Tick Fever, Tularemia and more. Ticks live in tall grasses and shrubs where they wait to attach themselves to a host. Ticks cannot fly or jump, but they sometimes fall from higher locations onto those they want to feed from. To remove a tick, you pull it out by its head, NOT the body (so that the head does not remain in your dog).

Fleas – Fleas are external parasites that feed on the blood of humans, mammals and birds. Fleas are very small, dark, wingless insects adapted for jumping. They can jump up to 200 times their body length! They have a very tough exoskeleton, making it incredibly hard to kill them by scratching, squeezing or smashing. They can live from 2 weeks to a few months depending on their feeding. To treat, you can use flea removal shampoos or treatments that will help your puppy on its way to feeling like itself again!

Spiders – There are many types of spiders that can bite dogs. Most are harmless and will leave only a small bump or bite mark that can be treated with a topical cream, but if you live in an area where there are poisonous spiders, you should always take precaution and be aware of any changes in your dogs’ behaviour.

Bees and Wasps – Bees and wasps can be major pests to both you and your dog. If you find that your dog has been stung, try to remover the stinger as soon as possible. If you notice major swelling that is abnormal, taking your dog to the vet would be advisable as it is most likely an allergic reaction.

Mosquitoes – Mosquitoes may be the most common pest your dog may face this summer. Although mainly harmless, too many bites may cause your fuzzy friend to become very uncomfortable. Many pet stores carry dog (and human) friendly bug and mosquito sprays that help prevent any unwanted bites and scratches. Most of them also contain moisturizers to treat any bumps they already have!
